The Royal Docks’ ExCel Exhibition centre is one of those buildings which almost every east-ender is likely to recognise and be able to point out the moment the DLR train rattles past it on their way to work or Central London with a family member or friend. Spanning the length of the distance between two DLR stations, making it one of the largest Docklands buildings lengthways, the ExCel calls itself the “UK’s most flexible event space” and is known for its yearly and recent events such as the London Boat Show, Comic Con, Prudential RideLondon Cycling Show, Intecol ecology convention and ECOC – Europe’s largest optical communications event for those who are interested in and work within the fibreoptic communication industry.
For those who are interested in London’s large skyscrapers, the ExCel is just a few stops away from Canary Wharf in Poplar, location of the famous One Canada Square, HSBC and Barclay’s buildings. This area also contains some of London’s most expensive places to live with the newest penthouses costing more than a million.
As we pointed out earlier, there are two DLR stations of which can be used to gain access to the ExCel. The first station is Prince Regent for ExCel (East) and the second is Custom House for ExCel (West). Both of these stations can be reached by simply taking the Jubilee (grey) line to Canning Town and alighting on the east bound trains towards Beckton.
If you are travelling from the City the best line to travel along is Central (red) line and change onto DLR at Bank towards Beckton. Once you have made it onto the DLR you journey will take approximately 30 to 40 minutes with no need to alight at any point.
London is well known for its heavy emissions of carbon dioxide and other dangerous gasses so, by continuously working with a number of “green” companies and sources, the ExCel also likes to maintain a sustainable environment around the local area in order to encourage and promote a cleaner atmosphere.
With approximately 3,700 parking spaces in the ExCel’s car park, driving there is also another option without the fear of being unable to park. Enter the postcode E16 1DR into the sat nav and follow the signs towards ExCel, Royal Docks or the City Airport.
If you are looking to attend a large event or convention in London but want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the City throughout the day and night, the ExCel is the one place that Royaldocks.info and, we’re sure, many others would recommend.
