THE MS SUBNITZ in Royal Victoria Dock on 14/08/2012
Spotted in Royal Victoria Dock…the Subnitz, or to give it, it’s full name the “Motorschiff Stubnitz e.V. “was Built in 1964 at the Volkswerft Stralsund, MS Stubnitz is the sole surviving specimen of its type and is listed as a Monument of German Shipbuilding by the city of Rostock.
In 1993 it was transformed into a mobile platform for music, cultural production, documentation and communication. The three converted cargo holds have excellent acoustic qualities, can accommodate around 700 people in total and are ideally suited as venues for live music, exhibitions, performances and media art.
The main part of the maintenance and cultural work is done on a voluntary basis, the artists and co-workers lodged and fed on board.
Since 1994 Stubnitz has visited 15 diferent ports across 10 European countries, researching and presenting innovative youth culture and forming partnerships with local culture organizations and promoters. More than 430 000 people have attended more than 1500 events hosted by Stubnitz. More than 3000 live performances by artists from 30 countries all over the world have been documented and preserved in an on-board audio / video archive. Each performance is recorded by 2-3 cameras, live mix and biophonic audio equipment, then edited and catalogued in an on-board multi-media lab.
Stubnitz maintains a file server and a web site where fragments of this vast archive material are now gradually being ofered for public viewing.
We are constantly looking for new joint projects with authorities of European port cities, local and international culture organizations, to bring this fascinating environment and a diverse cultural program to the full access of the local public.
